The Triangle Area encompasses the main cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill as well as the internationally recognized Research Triangle Park. Other towns and municipalities include Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina, Garner, Clayton, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Pittsboro, Carrboro and Hillsborough. Over 1.2 million residents now make up the Triangle's diverse population. The Research Triangle Park (RTP) is a premier address for relocating and expanding companies that want access to technology-transfer opportunities made possible by the Park's close ties with Duke University, University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. RTP is the largest planned research park in the United States, consisting of 45,000 employees on 7,000 acres. Some of the most notable tenants include Cisco Systems, EPA, Ericsson, IBM and Nortel.
In 2000, Money.com rated the Triangle as the Best Place to live and work in the South. In July, 2003, Sperling's Best Places rated 331 metropolitan areas in categories relevant to Americans today including cost of living, crime rate, education, home prices and weather. Based on these categories and as reported on msn.com, Raleigh ranked Number 1! In 2004, Employment Review Online rated the Triangle Area Number 1 as America's Best Places to Live and Work for the second year in a row.
Raleigh, the state capital, is a culturally progressive community with the North Carolina Museum of Art and the North Carolina Symphony in residence. Raleigh is also the home to North Carolina State University, a top ranked engineering and agriculture institution of higher learning. Cary, the third fastest growing community in the US in 1995, is a family oriented suburb of Raleigh with planned development.
Durham, known internationally as the "City of Medicine" because of the Duke University Medical Center is also the home of the American Dance Festival.
